Located near the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay between Fremont and San Jose, the City of Milpitas is forty-five miles south of San Francisco. With a population of approximately 67,000, Milpitas is a progressive community that is an integral part of the high tech Silicon Valley. The City of Milpitas has a full service Finance Department with a staff of 34 full-time employees and a $3 million dollar budget. The Director's management team includes the Finance Director, Finance Manager, Budget Manager, and Purchasing Agent. The department’s responsibilities include budget, accounting, treasury, debt management, utility billing and collection, risk management, internal audit and purchasing.

We are seeking exceptional, enthusiastic, and creative individuals with excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to develop effective working relationships, and a commitment to provide quality customer service. The current opening is for a Senior Accountant in the Accounting Services Division of the Department of Financial Services. The Senior Accountant is an advanced journey level classification. The incumbent is expected to plan, organize, direct, and review the specific accounting functions of the Finance Division; to perform advanced level accounting duties; to participate in budgeting and other technical finance work.

Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible experience in accounting, including experience in governmental accounting. Including one year of supervisory experience.

Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting or a closely related field.

Knowledge of:
• Principles and practices of general and municipal government accounting and auditing.

• Principles and practices of budgeting.

• Principles of supervision, training and evaluation.

• Laws regulating public finance and fiscal operations.

• Modern office practices, procedures, methods and equipment

Ability to:
• Analyze and interpret financial and accounting records.

• Prepare complex financial statements, reports and analyses.

• Design and install new and improved financial systems.

• Plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.

• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with others.

• Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Must possess and maintain throughout employment a valid California Driver’s License.

Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment: Ability to work in a standard office environment; use of a computer; and able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Milpitas.

(New Hire Employee pays 7% employee PERS contribution and 12.3% towards employer PERS contribution)
Retirement In compliance with AB340, CalPERS retirement formula is either 2% at age 62, or 2% at age 60, depending on the individual’s eligibility.
