Program Description: 

The GFOA best practices are the gold-standard for how governments should run their budgeting process. This course will provide participants with an overview of citizen, stakeholder, and constituent engagement in the budget process.  The course will explore best practices in public engagement for all aspects of the budget development process as well as related opportunities and challenges.  Instructors will facilitate discussion of the purpose and benefits of public participation and explore how various methods can be applied. They will address the challenges encountered by local governments who have sought to facilitate public involvement in the budget process and the solutions they have employed to meet those challenges. Attendees will leave the course with a broad understanding of the purpose of public participation in the budget process, the tools available to facilitate participation, and various methods available to local government organizations.

  • How do local governments go about involving the public in the budget process
  • Thoroughly understand the core components of public participation in the budget process
