Description & Details

The City of Port Hueneme is seeking qualified candidates for the position of an Accountant; this recruitment will fill one vacancy for the position. Incumbents perform duties related to the application of Governmental Accounting, Auditing, and Financial Reporting Standards as developed by GFOA, and the application of GAAP as they relate to municipal finance. Employees in this classification perform professional level work. Position is responsible for account reconciliation, worksheet preparation, and computer use and report preparation. The position also assists with annual programs and special reports and performs related duties as assigned.


•    Is experienced in general accounting, utility billing, accounts payable and receivable; revenue collections and payroll.
•    Has experience in budget accounting and working with categorical programs, preferably in
a governmental environment, is highly desirable.
•    Is accurate, detail-oriented and self-directed with strong organizational skills and an ability to evaluate situations in context of the “big picture”.
•    Skill in complex analysis of financial transactions and preparing accurate, concise reports for management use.
•    Has high standards for work product, excels in a team environment and has demonstrated ability to under pressure with time constraints and deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
•    Has strong communication skills both in oral and written form, and the ability to meet constantly changing priorities.
•    Is motivated by the great professional growth and satisfaction that comes from working in an environment ripe with challenge and possibility.
•    Exceptional skills in word and Excel, ability to write formulas, and prefer someone with ability to work with pivot tables.
•    Is skilled in the preparation of a variety of complex financial and statistical reports.

•    Is skilled in performing arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy.
•    Is skilled in the operation of modern office equipment, including computers and software.
•    Has demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships contacted in the performance of their duties.

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work emphasis in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, Business Administration or a related field; supplemented by three (3) years previous experience that includes fund accounting, audits, and reconciliation; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
